This year is shaping up to be a dangerous flu season.
It is therefore even more important to protect against flu in 2019. To keep yourself, your staff and your workplace healthy this Winter, consider offering flu vacs if you haven’t already. There are other things you can do as well as providing staff flu vaccinations.
The flu is highly contagious. It spreads easily through droplets from coughing and sneezing. These droplets can settle onto hard surfaces, for example doorknobs, and can then pass from hands to nose, mouth or eyes.
Flu spreads even more quickly among large groups e.g. offices, childcare centres, aged care and health care facilities. Infection rates can be two to three times higher in some of these circumstances.
Offering a flu vaccination is the single best way to prevent the spread of influenza.
Infection control measures for the flu virus
Aside from providing your team with flu vacs, other infection control measures you can encourage in your workplace include:
- covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
- throwing the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after use!
- washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective
- avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth as that is how the disease is commonly spread.
